At times, even the most healthy, well-put-together people get sucked into toxic relationships and cannot get out. Signs of a toxic relationships may be:
- relationships defined by power and control
- one partner repeatedly attempts to end the relationship but cannot
- boundaries are repeatedly violated
- angry, jealous or possessive partners
- substance-abusing partners
- client tolerates behaviors he/she would not in other relationships
- client feels she/he cannot live without the partner
- friends and family around client express concern about the relationship
While toxic relationships happen regularly, few therapists have the knowledge and a specific plan to assist the client in working through the process of leaving. Clients know they need to leave, and often have attempted to do so, but find themselves pulled back into the toxicity and feel unable to break the cycle.
The therapists at Brandt Therapy Clinics, Inc. have developed specific tools and skills to allow a client to slowly pull themselves from the hold a toxic relationship may have on them. Clients, who are often scared and hopeless that they will ever be able to find the self-discipline to leave, are often happy to find that a combination of knowledge, skills and self-awareness can lead to small steps which eventually allows the client to get out of the toxic quicksand.
