The therapists at Brandt Therapy Clinics, Inc. work from an approach that sees the interaction between couples as the problem, rather than each individual. This approach makes it possible to work effectively on the relational problems with only one person from the couple to still affect the relationship. While having both partners in the room speeds the process, working individually can be equally successful and is sometimes indicated over couples therapy.
In individual relational therapy, clients learn to:
- protect themselves from hurt in relationships
- be accountable to meet their own needs
- set and enforce boundaries
- develop effective communication tools
- make decisions about relationships
- challenge unhelpful thinking
- manage trauma, depression, anxiety, addictions
- develop a healthy relationship with anger
- manage Adult Child of Alcoholic issues
- become able to face and manage roadblocks
- create positive self-image
- manage stress and change
- deal with shame and confusion around infidelity, addictions, dishonesty
- manage extended family to protect current family
- find balance and healthy attachments
- manage individual vs couples identity
Therapy that begins as individual therapy may become couples therapy as the work progresses as often the partner sees positive changes in the relationship as a result and chooses to become involved.
